Sustainable and Generative Production Strategies

Cross-cultural research and a farm residency on sustainable ways to make artist film.

Not many film projects take you to a farm. This one took me to the Glamorgan Heritage Coast in Wales. Sustainable and Generative Production Strategies was a Connections Through Culture 2023-24 project. That British Council grant backs new collaborations between the UK and East Asia. It joined Fieldwork Studio, Marginalia Pictures and Gunung Cherita, the studio I co-founded.

We looked at inclusive ways to develop and produce artist film, moving image and performance to camera. It ran through research, digital exchange and in-person residencies.

The residency was at Slade Farm Organics, a three-generation tenant farm. It brought Phoebe Davies, Qila Gill and me together with artists, filmmakers, researchers and producers from Wales and the UK, sharing methods across art, film, ecology and agriculture. The programme was shaped by the principles of organic agriculture: health, ecology, fairness and care.
